Hiking to the Kvalvika Beach – The most stunning Viking beach in Lofoten Islands

Kvalvika Beach is one of the most impressive beaches I’ve ever been to, including those on the Maldives. Lofoten is simply one of the most interesting localities in the world. You probably wouldn’t expect a nice beach in Scandinavian countries, but Lofoten offers countless marvelous beaches such as Kvalvika.

Discover the beauty of Lofoten Beaches

Let me tell you one thing straight – I’ve seen many beaches, including those in the Maldives, but the Kvalvika beach is by far the most beautiful and impressive. Kvalvika is huge and cozy at the same time. It’s wild and radiates in many beautiful colors. And the water at Kvalvika beach? It is crystal clear. And as a bonus, it is surrounded by sharp mountain peaks, only found at the Lofoten Islands. Still, Kvalvika beach is without a doubt one of the most amazing beaches in the world. Trust me! When you see this black and white beach, you wouldn’t believe your eyes.

How to Get To Kvalvika Beach and Ryten Mountain Hiking Tips

Kvalvika beach is located only about 3 km from the village of Fredvang in the Lofoten Islands (northern region of Moskenesøy). The trail to Kvalvika starts at a small parking lot found approximately 2 km down the road from this tiny village.

Well, to get to the Kvalvika beach, you have to climb a small mountain and pass through a saddle between two mountains. But don’t worry – the elevation is only about 200 m. So it’s a pretty easy hike. The whole hike to Kvalvika beach takes 1-2 hours. However, bad weather conditions (particularly wind) can make the journey much more unpleasant 🙂

I recommend you to combine this trip with a hike to the Ryten mountain, which rises above this fabulous Kvalvika beach as a stone guardian of ancient times. It’s a gorgeous view from there.

First of all head to the Kvalvika beach and after that to the northern surroundings. One small problem is that first you have to descend to the beach to start climbing to the top of Mount Ryten, and at this time is an elevation of about 400 m. That means 2 hours of extra hiking. Is it worth it? 100% yes!

Hike to the famouse Kvalvika beach in Lofoten - Norway
The other side of Kvalvika Beach

There are many beautiful places on Lofoten Islands in Norway, but the beach of Kvalvika surprised me the most. For me, it is one of the top destinations that you simply HAVE TO visit. If only I could bathe in the cold water, I would have spent much more time there. But who knows, maybe you will be braver than me … 🙂

Kvalvika Beach hiking tips:

—> If you have a tent with you, Kvalvika Beach is the perfect destination to spend a magical night!

—> if you are planning to spend the night in one of the campsites, try a camp located less than 2 km north of Fredvang where you can have a delicious homemade cake for breakfast 🙂

Trail map to Kvalvika Beach

I recommend driving to the parking area, where the main trail to Kvalvika Beach begins. Get there early in the morning because the parking area is small and soon will be full. But if you want to hike (like I did), you need to arrive by bus to Fredvang or start from a campsite near Fredvang. See the map below for more information!
